Sensei Bernardo

Karate Training and Certifications:
- Began training at San Francisco State University with Sensei Mayer Parry in
1981. Earned 3rd kyu in 1983.
- Continued training with Sensei Leroy Rodrigues in 1983 at Shinkyu
Shotokan South San Francisco Parks & Recreation Center. Earned Shodan
in 1986. Also awarded Shodan and Nidan in Shrinji Ryu Karate-Do in 1986.
Started teaching in 1986 at the Shinkyu Shotokan Karate dojo.
- Enhanced training with Sensei Al McGaughey beginning in 1998. Awarded
rank of Sensei and Senior Instructor at Pine Waves Karate Academy in
2003.
- Achieved the rank of Yondan (4th Degree Black Belt) with Shinkyu
Shotokan Karate in March 23, 1994.
- Achieved the rank of Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) with Shinkyu
Shotokan Karate in October 13, 2002
- Achieved the rank of Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) with the International
Society of Okinawan / Japanese Karate-Do in June 7, 2006
- Achieved the rank of Rokudan (6th Degree Black Belt) with Shinkyu
Shotokan Karate in June 2007
Championships:
- Began competing in 1983 as a brown belt and took first place in kumite. Has
competed since 1983 in many local and regional karate tournaments
consistently placing in the top three finalists in both kata and kumite. That
includes winning the Northern California Karate Championships, Kanazawa
Cup, Grand Champion in the All American ATAMA Classic.
